River Bend Hills is less than a 5 minute walk to the Clifton Road Bridge on the river, a great place to drop your tube or kayak and head north. Surrounded by a half dozen State parks with endless trails, there is no end to outdoor activities in the area. We are also just downstream from Helton Creek, famous trout Federally stocked trout stream.
Meadowsweet is an 1895 farmhouse built by Scottish immigrant Joe Campbell. Joe built the house from American chestnut and oak from the property. He built the hearth in the parlor from local soapstone that he mined. Surrounded by lovely gardens with a mountain stream in the backyard flowing into the pond, the serenity and peace will put one at ease. As an Inn and Guest Lodging House you will enjoy a serene mountain landscape in a peaceful beautiful setting. Feel free to sit in the garden house or on its porch and enjoy the fountain or gaze at the butterflies. Stroll through the gardens and rest in the shade by the stream or simply by the pond and meditate.
If the next thing on your list is to slow down and smell the fresh mountain air then the ‘Secluded Hideaway’ is just what you are looking for. You will be able to sit on the large covered front porch (8’X36′), back deck (8’X36′), side deck (11’X44′) and watch for birds, squirrels and deer and also roast marshmallows over the outdoor fire pit. This four bedroom and 2 bath cottage is perfect for large families (max of 8 people) and small alike. Pool and ping pong table combination in basement. The New River State Park Elk Shoals Access is just .3 mi from the front door across wooden bridge where you can swim, kayak, canoe and fish. Within 7 miles there are restaurants and shopping (Super Walmart, Family Dollar Store, Dollar Tree, Cato’s, Lowes), grocery stores (Food Lion, Ingles Grocery Store and Walmar), and numerous antique and craft shops and more. River House is not only a North Carolina Bed and Breakfast but a Country Inn that’s really in the country, located in Grassy Creek, North Carolina in the Blue Ridge mountains and directly on the historic New River. There’s a mile of riverfront for strolling, wading, tubing, canoeing and fishing. Brown trout and rainbows abound. Walking trails wind through 160 acres. Our neighbors include deer, rabbits, wild turkeys, a great blue heron, eagles and an occasional bear – just no mosquitoes.
Most of our twelve uniquely decorated guest rooms are converted farm buildings with king-size beds, private bathrooms, jacuzzis, art, books and country antiques.
That is reason enough to visit River House but the food is another. Elegant but unpretentious, the River House restaurant is known for its great food and ambiance. Only minutes from West Jefferson and forty-five minutes from Boone, River House is the first choice for fine dining in the Ashe County High Country area. The restaurant offers regional and international fine dining, an excellent wine list, and a full-service bar with all ABC permits. We are open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday. The Sunday Salon features live music, hors d’oeuvres and a four-course Chef’s choice menu. Reservations are essential.
Breakfast is served in the main house daily between 8:30 and 10:00. While it is complimentary for overnight guests, many local residents choose to book for private business meetings or simple personal enjoyment.
On-site lunches or picnic fare may be pre-arranged, a pleasant adjunct when renting our kayaks or canoes. We will take you up-river so you can take your time floating back to us.
While you are here at our Bed and Breakfast, visit nearby sites such as New River State Park, Grayson Highlands and Mt. Jefferson. Drive the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Bike the popular Creeper Trail. But… one of the most popular things to do is absolutely nothing. Relax in rocking chairs on the front porch or in chaises under the big sycamore tree overlooking the river. All rooms have wi-fi. Our buildings date back to the 1870’s, thus we are only partially ADA accessible.

Tucked away at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you will find a secluded glen of historic cabins surrounding a natural spring. The historic Healing Spring was discovered in 1884 and was originally called Thompson’s Bromine and Arsenic Springs. The property was then known as Healing Springs Resort in later years and is now simply called The Cabins at Healing Springs.
Many of the cabins are the original cabins that were built back in the early 1900s. We are proud to be on the National Register of Historic Places. The natural spring known as “Healing Spring” is reported to have healing abilities and recorded to have cured everything from poison ivy to rheumatism, indigestion to ulcers.
Between 1889 and 1899, the distribution of the water from Healing Springs played an interesting part of Ashe County’s history and development. Local tradition has held steadfast for over 100 years that the waters have curative powers.
