The museum is administered by a board of volunteers. The daily operation of the museum is managed by its employees.

Sharing our Mountain Heritage! The Christmas in July Festival is one of the best, old fashioned summer festivals in the South drawing thousands to historic West Jefferson, NC each July! The Festival began in 1987 as a celebration of the Christmas Tree Industry Ashe County, NC is known for. In 2015, Ashe County, NC was named the #1 Christmas Tree producer in the United States. The Festival is a free-admission event held in Downtown West Jefferson featuring the very best in traditional mountain music, handmade arts & crafts vendors throughout the region while still celebrating the Christmas Tree industry. Numerous food vendors feature a variety of the infamous delicious festival foods & more.

Children’s activities, roving performers, fun competitions, non-profits and the Farmers’ Market are also part of the festival each year.

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is a 1,188-acre North Carolina state park in Ashe County, North Carolina in the United States. Located near Jefferson, North Carolina, it includes the peak of Mount Jefferson, named for Thomas Jefferson and his father Peter, who owned land nearby and surveyed the North Carolina-Virginia border in 1749. In 1974, Mount Jefferson State Natural Area was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.

Located in Ashe County 25 miles northeast of Boone, Mount Jefferson State Natural Area surrounds a natural landmark that offers vistas as far as Tennessee from its overlooks and Luther Rock. The mountain, first spotted from the Blue Ridge Parkway, rises abruptly from the surrounding landscape. But… one of the most popular things to do is absolutely nothing. Relax in rocking chairs on the front porch or in chaises under the big sycamore tree overlooking the river. All rooms have wi-fi. Our buildings date back to the 1870’s, thus we are only partially ADA accessible.

Tucked away at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you will find a secluded glen of historic cabins surrounding a natural spring. The historic Healing Spring was discovered in 1884 and was originally called Thompson’s Bromine and Arsenic Springs. The property was then known as Healing Springs Resort in later years and is now simply called The Cabins at Healing Springs.

Many of the cabins are the original cabins that were built back in the early 1900s. We are proud to be on the National Register of Historic Places. The natural spring known as “Healing Spring” is reported to have healing abilities and recorded to have cured everything from poison ivy to rheumatism, indigestion to ulcers.

Between 1889 and 1899, the distribution of the water from Healing Springs played an interesting part of Ashe County’s history and development. Local tradition has held steadfast for over 100 years that the waters have curative powers.

If the next thing on your list is to slow down and smell the fresh mountain air then the ‘Secluded Hideaway’ is just what you are looking for. You will be able to sit on the large covered front porch (8’X36′), back deck (8’X36′), side deck (11’X44′) and watch for birds, squirrels and deer and also roast marshmallows over the outdoor fire pit. This four bedroom and 2 bath cottage is perfect for large families (max of 8 people) and small alike. Pool and ping pong table combination in basement. The New River State Park Elk Shoals Access is just .3 mi from the front door across wooden bridge where you can swim, kayak, canoe and fish. Within 7 miles there are restaurants and shopping (Super Walmart, Family Dollar Store, Dollar Tree, Cato’s, Lowes), grocery stores (Food Lion, Ingles Grocery Store and Walmar), and numerous antique and craft shops and more.
